My name is Katie Gentry and I have been an art teacher for twenty years.  I graduated from Marshall University in 2004 with a BA in Secondary Education Art K-12.  I completed my National Board Certification in Early Middle Child Art in 2008 and renewed my certification in 2018. I earned my Masters in Art Education from East Carolina University in 2015 and have a strong background in art history as well as fine art.  I strongly believe every person has a creative side and learning about art should be a fun, meaningful experience.  I am looking forward to sharing my passion for art and inspiring students to be creative this school year.

Courses I Teach:

Foundations of Art 1
Foundations of Art 1 and Foundations of Art 2 may be taken in the same school year or subsequent years.  To take both in the same year you would sign up for Foundations of Art 1 during the first semester and Foundations of Art 2 for second semester.  This course is an analysis and application of the elements of art and principles of design and their possibilities in two dimensional and three dimensional media.  This course offers studio experience with concentration on basic drawing, color mixing, and care of materials.  Students will work in a variety of techniques and media that may include pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, chalk pastel, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, and clay.  Written critiques are a required component of the course.  All students will develop and maintain a digital art portfolio.

Foundations of Art 2
This course is a continuation of Foundations of Art 1.  Students will expand their knowledge and skills so they analyze and apply the elements of art and principles of design and their possibilities in two dimensional and three dimensional media.  Students will work in a variety of techniques and media that may include pencil, colored pencil, acrylic paint, scratchboard, watercolor paint, collage, and pastel .  Written and oral critiques are a required component of the course.  All students will develop and maintain a digital art portfolio.

Studio Art
This intermediate art course focuses on drawing from observation, exploration of materials and processes and the use of color in two dimensional and three dimensional art.  Written and oral critiques are a required component of the course.  Students will work in a variety of mediums such as pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, water miscible oil paint, acrylic paint, and clay.  Emphasis will be given to advanced drawing, composition, and color theory.  The student is required to purchase a 9 x 12 sketchpad or sketchbook. Sketchbooks can be purchased at 5 Below, Wal-Mart, and on Amazon.  All students will develop and maintain a digital art portfolio.

Advanced Studio Art
This course is an advanced course for art students wishing to work in two dimensional media.  Students will be challenged to write artist statements, project proposals, and to develop their personal style through self-directed projects based on provided themes.  Written and oral critiques are a required component of the course.  Complex artwork will be produced with a sharp focus on dynamic composition, exemplary technique and conceptual process.  The student is required to have a 9 x 12 sketchpad or sketchbook (students may continue using the same sketchbook from Studio Art). An art portfolio (24” x 36”) is optional but encouraged if students plan on a career in art.  All students will develop and maintain a digital art portfolio.

AP 2D Art and Design
AP 2D Art and Design explores the use of specific design principles across a variety of media. Students  create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students will submit portfolios for evaluation by the AP College Board based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation and revision, and guided by questions.  The AP portfolio is a requirement of the course.

AP Drawing
AP Drawing corresponds to the equivalent of a one-semester, introductory college course in drawing and painting respectively. Students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students are required to submit portfolios for evaluation by the AP College Board based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation and revision, and guided by questions.
