The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced on September 13 that three Mount Vernon seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists. Our Semifinalists will compete against approximately 16,000 other students for a chance to obtain a National Merit Scholarship this spring. Congratulations to National Merit Semifinalists Mateo Pechon-Elkins, Hannah Hofferberth, and Ian Hawthorne.
To qualify for a Semifinalist position, these students competed against 1.3 million juniors from about 21,000 high schools across the country. They were among the highest-scoring participants in the state of Florida on the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT). Their scores, combined with their academic record, extracurricular activities, community service, leadership abilities, and awards received, are all factored into their possible selection as Finalists.
