Senior Leadership Dominates on the Field

Boys Soccer 2021

By Jack Craigo, Jacket Journal Writer

The Mount Vernon Boys Soccer team has always been above average, but this season their record really showed how well this team did.

The Boys Soccer Team’s final record was 13-3-1 including playoffs, and the in-season record was 12-2-1. Some of Mount Vernon’s players who received recognition for their efforts were seniors Jacob Deever and Christian Dean. Both seniors earned first-team All-OCC honors.

Seniors Colten Spurgeon and Isiah Jones earned second-team honors and seniors Andrew White and Mays Gunderson earned honorable mention honors. The soccer team made it into the second round of the playoffs which is the farthest the soccer team has made it in the past few years. “A lot of the seniors tried to get together and practice even on off days and kick around, and even in practice there wasn't much negativity and a lot of constructive criticism instead of putting others down”, said sophomore Jack Marhefka Senior leadership was a key factor in the Yellow Jacket's success. “ We had a group of 10 seniors that stuck through 4 years, we have really good chemistry and all get along super well. Also, the younger guys stepping up helped a lot,¨ said Spurgeon.

Leadership along with role models who stepped up on and off the field became an essential part of soccer success. “Guys like Christian, Logan, and Jacob's positive attitudes kept us together and didn't let us fall apart and didn't let us give up in those close games,'' said Spurgeon. Dean also earned 2nd Team All-Central Ohio District. In addition to the Ohio Scholastic Coaches Association Award for students earning above a 3.7 GPA.
