United Service Day
The fifth graders at Twin Oak Elementary School have spent the last few months learning how to identify challenges in their community and be part of a solution.

The students were divided into groups, and each devised a service project to help with the challenge they identified. They met with experts, planned projects, learned about grant writing, and asked for donations and volunteers.

Friday, May 19 Twin Oak hosted the first UNITED DAY OF SERVICE, and executed their service projects around our community. These groups:
  • Made homemade cat toys and took them to the cat shelter
  • Learned how to weave mats from plastic bags to donate to the Winter Sanctuary Homeless Shelter. These mats will provide a water-resistant place for someone to sleep this summer.
  • Painted the Memorial Skate Park (check out the new orange and black, which has replaced the graffiti and curse words on the skate ramps!!)
  • Built an outdoor food pantry for families in need at Twin Oak Elementary
  • Cleaned Ariel Foundation Park!
  • Read books and played games with the residents at The Living Center
Twin Oak students with members of the Mount Vernon Police Department in front of Rastin Tower.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped these fantastic kids. We’d also like to thank the Mount Vernon Police Department for surprising our crew at Ariel Foundation Park! The kids celebrated their hard work by racing to the top of the tower. Thanks for your support!

If you see the students and staff from Twin Oak this weekend, be sure to give them a high-five! They have earned it!! THANK YOU for the fantastic work you did for our community today!!!
