Greetings Mount Vernon City School Families,

We are excited to welcome students back for the start of the 2023-2024 school year.  Our theme for the coming school year is "Optimism and Opportunity Ignites Excellence"  It is a simple concept that challenges each of us to intentionally embrace Opportunities with a sense of Optimism in search of Excellence.

This letter is intended to provide you with some back-to-school information.  We have developed a “Back to School” Infographic to serve as a quick visual presentation on a variety of topics.  We will also address some specific topics in greater detail after the Infographic.Mount Vernon City Schools Back to School Infographic.

Specific Topics Addressed in Greater Detail:

School Start Dates: The first day for students will be Thursday, August 17th with the following exceptions:

  • Kindergarten: We will be utilizing a one-week staggered start for all Kindergarten students this year.  Students will be divided into two groups and attend on alternating days.  Specific information will be forthcoming from your school.  We believe this one-week smaller group transition will be beneficial for all students.

  • 6th Grade students will start on Thursday, August 17th.  6th Grade Orientation

  • 7th & 8th Grade Students will start on Friday, August 18th.

  • 9th Grade students will start on Thursday, August 17th.  9th Grade Orientation

  • 10th - 12th Grade Students will start on Friday, August 18th.

Back To School Nights:
To eliminate any conflicts for families who have Elementary, Middle and/or High School students we have staggered dates and times.

  • All six (6) elementary schools will have their ‘Back to School nights on Tuesday, August 15th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

  • Mount Vernon Middle School will have a ‘Meet & Greet’ for 7th & 8th-grade students on Tuesday, August 15th from 5:00-6:30 p.m.  Student schedules will be available and they will be encouraged to walk their schedule and visit classrooms.

  • Mount Vernon Middle School 6th-grade students will start school on Thursday, August 17th without 7th & 8th-grade students present.  This 6th-grade orientation will focus on all aspects relative to Middle School with the hopes of a smoother transition from 5th grade to 6th grade.  6th grade Parents/Students will be invited to a ‘Parents First Flight’ night on Wednesday, August 16th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

  • Mount Vernon High School will hold an ‘Open House’ for all students and parents on August 25th from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  All students will be able to pick up schedules at the High School from August 14th-16th from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Online School Forms: Every year parents must update several district forms.  We make this process easy and convenient through our online ‘Parent Portal.  If this link doesn't take you immediately to the ‘OneView’ login screen you can find it on the district website under the ‘For Families’ drop-down menu.  Please update the Student Emergency Medical Form and the District Authorization forms and select the ‘Save & Submit’ button at the bottom of the form.

Free & Reduced Application Form: While in your ‘OneView’ account you will also notice the Family Free/Reduced Lunch Form for 2023-24. We encourage all parents to fill out this confidential application as requirements have changed. If approved, your Breakfast/Lunches will be Free or Reduced as well as School Fees. By completing this application, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

School Breakfast & Lunches - For the last couple of years school breakfast and lunch have been free to all students.  It appears that this benefit will be going away for this coming school year.  That is a primary reason why we are encouraging families to complete the Free & Reduced application form.

  • Elementary:         Breakfast $ 1.00        Lunch $2.75       Extra Milk $.50

  • MS/HS:         Breakfast $1.25     Lunch $3.00       Extra Milk $.50

Masking - Mount Vernon City Schools will not mandate or require masks at this time on school transportation, In school settings, or in extracurricular activities.  The District welcomes students and staff who choose to wear a mask in school.

Mount Vernon Digital Academy
- We will continue to offer an online option for students in grades 6-12 through the Mount Vernon Digital Academy.  This is a Hybrid learning opportunity where students will periodically attend in-school sessions at the Board of Education Central Office classrooms while completing the majority of their work online.  If parents feel it necessary to explore online options we can assist in providing online provider information.  Please contact your MS or HS principal.

We are looking forward to an exciting year full of hope and promise as Optimism and Opportunity Ignites Excellence.

Respectfully Submitted!

William Seder Jr.
Superintendent
