Greetings Mount Vernon City School Families,
We are excited to welcome students back for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. Our theme for the coming school year is We Are One: Committed to Excellence! This motto reflects our collective spirit and dedication to providing the best experience for all our students. We all play a vital role in creating a positive and supportive environment for our students. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in their lives, providing a sense of hope and optimism that can lead to educational success.
This letter is intended to provide you with some back-to-school information. We have developed a “Back to School” Infographic to serve as a quick visual presentation on a variety of topics. After the infographic, we will also address some specific topics in greater detail.
Specific Topics Addressed in Greater Detail:
School Start Dates: The first day for students will be Tuesday, August 20th. with the following exceptions:
-
Kindergarten: We will utilize a staggered start - August 20th - 29th for all Kindergarten students this year. Students will be divided into two groups and attend on alternating days. All Kindergarten students will start on August 30th. Specific information will be provided by your school. We believe this one-week smaller group transition will be beneficial for all students.
-
6th Grade students will start on Tuesday, August 20th. 6th Grade Orientation - Jackets First Flight
-
7th & 8th Grade Students will start on Wednesday, August 21st.
-
9th Grade students will start on Tuesday, August 20th. 9th Grade Orientation
-
10th - 12th Grade Students will start on Wednesday, August 21st.
Back To School Nights:
We have staggered the dates and times to eliminate any conflicts for families with Elementary, Middle, and/or High School students.
-
All six (6) elementary schools will have their Back to School nights on Thursday, August 15th, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
-
Mount Vernon Middle School 6th-grade Parents/Students will be invited to a ‘Parents First Flight’ night on Thursday, August 15th, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. 6th-grade students will start school on Tuesday, August 20th, without 7th—and 8th-grade students present. This 6th-grade orientation will focus on all aspects relative to Middle School with the hopes of a smoother transition from 5th grade to 6th grade.
-
Mount Vernon Middle School will hold a ‘Meet & Greet’ for 7th—and 8th-grade students on Monday, August 19th, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Student schedules will be available, and students will be encouraged to walk their schedules and visit classrooms.
-
Mount Vernon High School will hold an ‘Open House’ for all students and parents on Thursday, August 22nd, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Students can also pick up schedules at the School from Wednesday, August 14th, to Monday, August 19th, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Online School Forms: Every year, parents must update several district forms. We make this process easy and convenient through our online Parent Portal. If this link doesn't immediately take you to the ‘OneView’ login screen, you can find it on the district website under the ‘For Families’ drop-down menu. Please update the Student Emergency Medical Form and the District Authorization forms and select the ‘Save & Submit’ button at the bottom of the form.
School Breakfast & Lunches - The Board of Education of Mount Vernon City Schools is excited to announce that all students will receive FREE breakfast and lunch for the 2024-2025 school year. The District applied for and was awarded a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) grant, making this possible. Student academic fees will also be waived for the 2024-2025 school year.
Free & Reduced Application Form: This year, we will not ask parents to complete the Free & Reduced Lunch forms. In the future, we may find it necessary to reinstate the importance of completing the forms, as it may be required to continue receiving FREE breakfast and lunch.
We look forward to an exciting year full of hope and promise as We Are One: Committed to Excellence!
Respectfully Submitted!
William Seder Jr.
