Mount Vernon City Schools is excited to announce its participation in the USDA's Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program (FFVP), a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and improving nutrition among students. Through this program, elementary students grades K-5 across the district will enjoy free, nutritious snacks consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day.The district applied for and received a grant to bring this outstanding opportunity to all elementary students, underscoring its commitment to enhancing student health and well-being. The FFVP not only provides access to fresh produce but also encourages children to expand their knowledge and appreciation of various fruits and vegetables. Students will have the chance to sample items such as grapefruit, snap peas, pineapple, raspberries, and even radishes—offering a diverse and flavorful experience.
“We believe that promoting healthy choices is key to supporting our students' growth and well-being,” said Meg Reed, Director of Food Services. “We are thrilled to offer this program to enhance their school experience.”
To keep families informed, the district has created a
FFVP Calendar detailing the fruits and vegetables being offered on Wednesdays and Fridays. This information is easily accessible on the district’s website under the ‘Lunch Menu’ tab, located on the left-hand side of the page.
Parents and guardians who have questions or would like additional information about the program are encouraged to reach out to their building secretary for support. With this initiative, Mount Vernon City Schools takes a meaningful step toward fostering healthier lifestyles and brighter futures for its students.
