TESOL
Supporting Multilingual Learners for Academic Success
Welcome! Bienvenida. ??. ?????? ??
Mount Vernon City Schools is committed to the success of every student through our TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program. The program provides specialized instruction for students whose primary language is not English, equipping them with the language skills necessary to thrive academically and socially.
Our TESOL team is led by Primary TESOL Instructor Carla Jo Furan, alongside Secondary TESOL Teacher Jennifer Ensminger. Together, they provide comprehensive support to multilingual learners across grade levels. Mrs. Furan brings eight years of experience working with elementary, middle, and high school English learners and is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where students feel confident, valued, and empowered to grow.
Instruction is individualized to meet students at their current level of English proficiency. Through differentiated strategies, interactive learning experiences, visual supports, and real-world connections, students strengthen their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while also building confidence and critical thinking abilities. Our TESOL educators emphasize strong relationships and culturally responsive practices, honoring and celebrating the diverse backgrounds of the students they serve.
At Mount Vernon City Schools, we believe multilingualism is a strength. Our TESOL program supports language development not only as an academic necessity, but as a powerful tool for communication, opportunity, and lifelong success.
